History
Southwood Psychiatric Hospital was built and founded in 1984. Traditional acute care inpatient services for
children and adolescents grew to include a variety of hospital and community based programs. These
expansions included the opening of several Long Term Residential Treatment Programs, as well as a variety of
community- based services, including Family Based Services which is an in-home program. A private academic
school license enhances the treatment services. The school currently serves both students in residence at
Southwood, as well as "Day" students that are approved for specialized education services.
Southwood currently has a thirty-five bed acute inpatient service utilized for crisis stabilization for children and
adolescents. The program utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a treatment model with a strong focus
on family involvement.
Southwood's residential treatment program currently consists of four programs, consisting of 132 beds for boys
ages 6 to 21. These residential programs utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a treatment model and
all require family / legal guardian involvement with the ultimate treatment goal being re-integration back into the
community . The four programs currently offered are: 1) Mental Retardation / Mental Health Dual Diagnosis
(MRDD) RTF located in Bridgeville, Pa., 2) Sexually Maladaptive Behaviors (SMB) RTF located at the main
hospital site in Upper St. Clair, Pa., 3) Psychiatric RTF located outside of Washington, Pa in the town of
Prosperity and 4) A Level II Transitional / Step-down RTF at this same location.
Southwood Hospital is a wholly owned subsidiary of Youth and Family Centered Services, Inc.
